Let the fun begin. My new motto is going to be: Just One More Mile.

Saturday, June 25

Weather - Sunny,  67 degrees (low humidity)

Clothing - Black running shorts (longer, biker style), Short sleeve tech shirt (green),  fuel belt,

Nutrition -   Ate a GU before the run. During the run:  (1) 8 oz water, (2) 8 oz powerade. A GU at around mile 6.

Route -  Started at the intersection of Lee Chapel Rd on Ox Road.  Went 1 mile down Ox towards Burke Lake Road and turned around.  Then went 3.5 miles down Ox towards Occoquan and turned around.

Distance Completed: 9  miles

Time:  Started at 5:00am, took 1 hour, 45 minutes.

J.W., T,  A, and I met at 5:00am to try to beat the heat.  It worked.  The heat was a not a factor and it actually wasn't that humid.  I had a bad stitch on my right side around mile 4 1/2 and it caused me to walk for a little of it.  Once the stitch was gone, I had to walk some, run some for the remainder of the run.

Anything I'd do different?  Yes, from now on, I am going to make sure I eat a banana before running.  I think the patasium has helped before feel better during the run, especially the longer mileage.   The temperature actually felt okay for most of the run.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  I was in pain during my runs from a quick workout with Katy that happened on Monday morning. A lot of pain in my legs.  But I ran and felt great afterwards.

Saturday, June 18

Weather - Sunny,  67 degrees (humid and sticky)

Clothing - Black running shorts (longer, biker style), Short sleeve tech shirt (Rockstar),  fuel belt,

Nutrition -   Ate nothing before. During the run:  (2) 8 oz water, (1) 8 oz powerade.

Route -  Started at the intersection of Lee Chapel Rd on Ox Road.  Went 2.64 miles down Ox (towards Occoquan) and turned around.  Made it a point to go to the gas station and then do the turnaround.

Distance Completed: 5.25  miles

Time:  Started at 6:00am, took 58 minutes

J.W., T,  A, and I met at 6:00am.  The schedule had us doing 3 miles, but we bumped it up and did 5, actually a little more.  I was able to keep up with the other women and run the whole time with them.  The heat at the end became an issue for me.  I do think I am starting to get faster on these outside runs. Yay!

Anything I'd do different?  No.  Everything worked on this run.  The temperature actually felt okay for most of the run.  It was only at the end I was getting super hot.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  On Tuesday's run, I felt my speed pick-up big-time.  Yay!

Saturday, June 11

Weather - Partly cloudy,  75 degrees and very HUMID!!

Clothing - Black running shorts (biker style), Short sleeve tech shirt (green one from One More Mile),  fuel belt, spi belt with cell phone

Nutrition -   Ate a banana before. During the run:  (2) 8 oz water, (2) 8 oz powerade, ate a GU at mile 4.

Route -  Started at the intersection of Lee Chapel Rd on Ox Road.  Went 3.75 miles down Ox (towards Occoquan) and turned around.

Distance Completed: 7.5  miles

Time:  Started at 6:00am, took 1 hr, 25 minutes

T, A, and I met at 6:00am.  We stuck to the schedule and did the 7.5 miles we had planned.  The heat and humidity was a huge factor for me and I had trouble breathing after about mile 2.  I hung in there and kept pace till about mile 6 and then drastically slowed down.  However, my running overall is getting much faster and I saw a big improvement on my time today (when I was doing the running part) even with the humidity being a factor.

Anything I'd do different?  No.  Other than wanting to start even earlier (not sure if this possible if I am meeting up with others), I am very happy I didn't chicken out and go to the gym for the run.   We are in this together!  Also, I am very happy with the new running shorts I purchased.  No chub rub today!  And the amount I sweated was crazy!!

I am just happy I gave it all my all and this run is now done!

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym. WOWEE!  Definitely seeing an improvement on my speed.

Sunday, June 5

Weather - Partly cloudy,  low 60's

Clothing - Black running shorts (Nike), Short sleeve tech shirt (black one more mile shirt),  fuel belt

Nutrition -   Ate nothing before. During the run:  (1) 8 oz water, (2) 8 oz powerade, ate a GU at mile 4.

Route -  Started at Burke Centre Parkway at Oak Green, went down Ox to Zion Dr (Exxon) and turned around.  Came back to the starting point and then took Burke Centre Parkway all the way down, across Old Keene Mill Road and made a left onto Goldfield.  Finished near the corner of Lapstrake and Goldfield.

Distance Completed: 7  miles

Time:  Started at 6:00am, took 1 hr, 22 minutes

J.W., T, and I met at 6:00am.  Originally on the schedule was a 3 mile run.  We felt like doing more and ended up running an additional 3 before I needed to take a longer than planned walking break.  We walked through 2 of the running sessions and then finished the rest running.  All told, we ran 7 miles.

Anything I'd do different?  Yes.  I started getting "chub rub".  Ugh!  Need to wear better shorts and start using body glide.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Wednesday, ran 4 miles on Friday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  It was great and I am starting to see some progress on the speed.  Also, I walked the Susan G. Komen 5k on Saturday.  It was a great exercise week.  A little more then 19 miles either walking or running.

Saturday, May 28

Weather- Sunny,  mid to high 60's

Clothing - Black running shorts, Short sleeve tech shirt (Rockstar shirt),  fuel belt,

Nutrition -   Ate nothing before. During the run:  (1) 8 oz water, (1) 8 oz powerade

Route -  Ox Road at the Lee Chapel Road intersection, went 3 miles towards Occoquan and then turned around and went back to starting point.

Distance Completed: 6  miles

Time:  Started at 6:00am, took 1 hr, 8 minutes

J.W. and I met at 6:00am  to get the run completed before the heat kicked in.  The temperature was fine, but on the way back for the last 3 miles, the humidity started to cause problems.  Ugh!  I guess when we go longer distances, we'll have to start even earlier.

Last week when we did the 6 miles, it took us 1 hr, 12 minutes, this week it took only 1 hr, 8 minutes.  Yowzer!  We managed to shave 4 minutes off our time.  Pretty cool.

Anything I'd do different?  No.  Glad it is done. I hate the heat.  :)

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  It was good.

Saturday, May 21

Weather - Sunny,  low 60's

Clothing - Black running shorts, Short sleeve tech shirt (Pacer Mother's day shirt),  fuel belt,

Nutrition -  ate a banana before, a vanilla gu at mile 3 and  (1) 8 oz water, (2) 8 oz powerade

Route - Burke Centre Parkway: starting at Old Keene Mill Road and Lee Chapel.  Went all the way to Kohl's and back to starting point.

Distance Completed: 6  miles

Time:  Started at 6:45am, took 1 hr, 12 minutes

We had on the schedule to do 4 miles, but we were feeling great and the weather was cooperating, so we did 6 instead.  It was a great run and Burke Centre Parkway provides some big and little hills.  It was only at the end that I felt like I wanted to walk the last hill, but I made it without taking any additional walking breaks.  Yay!

One of the coolest things was that I didn't have my music on until we reached 4.5 miles into the run.  We were so busy talking that it wasn't really needed.

Anything I'd do different?  No.  Everything clicked with this run.  The weather was beautiful and it wasn't humid.  There was even a slight breeze for some of it.  I couldn't ask for better weather.  However, I think this is the absolute hottest it can be and I'd still be okay outdoors.  Yes, I am in TROUBLE as the summer gets underway.  I have visions of me running at 4:00am.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  It was good.

Sunday, May 15

Weather -Sunny.  In the mid 60's; humid!

Clothing - Black running shorts, Short sleeve tech shirt (Rockstar), fuel belt, arm wallet with cell phone

Nutrition - ate a banana before, a vanilla gu at mile 3 and (2) 8oz water, (2) 8 oz powerade

Route - Burke Centre Parkway and Oak Green to Ox.  Ox to University Blvd and back to where we started

Distance Completed: 6  miles

Time:  Started at 7:30am, took 1 hr, 16 minutes

J.W. and I originally had planned to do 11 miles.  We were happy with how our training was going and didn't want to lose the base mileage we had built up.  We met as a group (J.W., T., A. and I) on Tuesday night and decided we would do the training for the marathon's long runs together and not join the training group we were considering.  We figure we can do this together!  We went through a few different training plan options and decided on one that seems good for our current level.  We backed out the long runs on the calendar and came to the decision we would only do a 6 mile run today.  We have plenty of time to build up to the much larger mileage.  And it would be good to follow the training plan as closely as possible.

Anything I'd do different?  Not sure about this.  It was my first run outdoors with the humidity being a factor.  OMG, I am in trouble once Summer really kicks in.  Big trouble!  The 6 miles were tough today.  I got about 1/2 way through it and had to slow down. And then it seemed like I couldn't slow down enough and ended up walking about 5 additional minutes than I should've.  I was sweating big time and really need to keep drinking the water and powerade to keep my body temp low.  It was a killer and I am now very nervous about having to run during the summer months.  Last year, I didn't run outside for about 3 months during the year because of the heat.  I guess I need to forge ahead and hope my body gets used to it.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  Tried to play with the speed to help go faster.  My runs at the gym were particularly good this week.

Saturday, May 7

Weather - Sunny, in the high 50s

Clothing - Black running shorts (Nike), Short sleeve tech shirt (Rockstar),  fuel belt, arm wallet with cell phone

Nutrition -  (1) 8 oz water, (1) 8 oz powerade

Route - Dangerfield Island on the Mount Vernon Trail / Mile Marker 12

Distance Completed: 3  miles

Time:  Started at 8:16am, took 33 minutes

J.W., T., A., and I met with the training group this morning.  The purpose of today's meeting was solely to find out what pace group you'd be running in.  It could anything from 9 minute miles to 14 minute miles.  We ran one mile as a warm-up, did the 2nd mile at the actual pace and then the 3rd mile was a cool down.  My time for the 2nd mile was 10:40.  I feel this is a good estimate of what I can do without pushing it too much.

Anything I'd do different?  No.  I love everything about this group and really want to sign up with them.  I was excited to go this morning and see what pace group I'd be put in.  My only hesitation is that you can't run with music.  I am not sure this is possible for me on the longer runs and frankly, I don't even know if I want to try.  I spoke to the program director who is very encouraging that I give the training group a try for the month of May before having to officially register.  The problem is the next couple of Saturdays already have some conflicts and I won't be able to make it.  J.W. and I are going to run next Sunday instead and do 11 miles.

I believe we may have a plan to form our own little training group.  We are going to meet one night this week and go over the many different training schedules I've found online and see what works best for us.  Plus, we'll coordinate our schedules and figure out best when to do the long runs, based on trips, holidays, other scheduling commitments, etc.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  Tried to play with the speed to help go faster.  I was most impressed that for the 4 mile run I was able to keep the pace at 6.0mph or 6.2mph setting on the treadmill for the running part.  Yay!

Saturday, April 30

Weather - Sunny, approx. 50 degrees

Clothing - Long black capris, long sleeve tech shirt, fuel belt, arm wallet with cell phone

Nutrition - Pack of running beans before starting,  (2) 8 oz water, (2) 8 oz powerade

Route - Starting on Ox Road at the intersection of Lee Chapel.  Take Ox all the way, past Lorton Road, and went approx. .25 miles down the Occoquan Regional Park trail and then turned around and did the route going back.

Distance Completed: 9 miles

Time:  Started at 7:05am, took 1 hr, 44 minutes

We tried a new route and loved it.  Big, open trail and almost all of it flat.  It was nice to check out new scenery when running.  One of J.W.'s friends joined us on this run.  She and J. had gone running on Thursday and did a faster pace than I will probably ever get to.  They had kept it between 9:00 and 9:17 minute miles.  Oh my!  At first we all started running together and I did a pretty good job of keeping up, but once we got to this one hill (when we entered the park), I lost all my momentum and slowed down drastically; back to the pace I am used to -- SLOW!  J. and T. kept their pace on the way back and did great running at the faster time.  I was hurting big-time on the way back.  It took all my mental strength to keep running and not walk back the whole way.

Anything I'd do different?   Yes!  Glad you asked.  I really enjoy my Saturday runs and want to keep enjoying them, but this run this morning was a tough one for me.  Watching J.W. and her friend getting further and further ahead of me and having to yell "WALK!!" , "RUN!!" as loud as I possibly could every 3 minutes/1 minute intervals was not fun for me.  I started really hating the run on the way back.  I am super proud of J.W. for being able to run a faster pace.  She makes it look effortless.  I, however, don't think I'll ever have a faster pace than what I have.  I am fine with that.  I don't need to be setting any records and for me, slow & steady wins the race.    But I have a feeling that my days of running with J.W. are coming to an end.  I started the run today way too fast and got burned out 1/2 way through it.  I need to more mindful of what my body is capable of doing and start off slow so that I have the energy and endurance to see the end.

As for clothing, I could've been fine wearing a short sleeve shirt.  I think I've reached the temp limits on wearing both long sleeve top and long capri running pants.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  Tried to play with the speed to help go faster.  I also did the 5 mile loop of Burke Lake Park on Wednesday.  This was walking at a brisk pace.

Saturday, April 23

Weather - Approx. 46 degrees, Overcast

Nutrition -
Pack of running beans before starting,  (1) 8 oz water, (1) 8 oz powerade

Route - Hills, hills, hills!!  Starting at the Kohl's sign on Burke Centre Parkway to Roberts Road, made a right onto Roberts. Down Roberts to Braddock Road, made a left onto Braddock.  Took Braddock to Ox, made a right onto Ox.  Ox back to Burke Centre Parkway.  Made a right onto Burke Centre Parkway.

Distance Completed:  7 miles

Time:  Started at 7:30 am, took 1 hr, 21 minutes

7 hilly miles baby!  Again the weather was iffy and we weren't sure the run would happen this morning.  We got lucky and it only slightly drizzled the first 1/4 mile or so.  Overall the weather was nice (perfect in my opinion!)

I think it is good to mix up the route a bit and do some hills to get our legs stronger.  I was surprised at how much easier it was to run down Roberts today.  It is really making a difference running each week and the hills weren't as bad this time around.  Yes, I am saying that.  Me, who hates anything at all with the slightest incline, even going over a speed bump.

Here's the best part about this morning's run.  I did it without one bit of music.  None, nada, zip.  Not even one beat of a drum or a strum of a guitar or a line or two of lyrics.  J.W.'s iPod wasn't working (found this out right before we were set to start) and I decided to give it a try and run without any tunes.  I am impressed that I could do it. However, I discovered something that I hadn't realized before.  I hate listening to myself breathe when I am running.  I feel like I sound like a huge cow on a stampede.

Anything I'd do different?  No, not on this run.  I am pleased to see that I could run without music, but I really don't want to make it a habit.  :)

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  My speed was on the slow side.  Both times I walked a bit and started to talking to the people on either side of me.  This really messed with my ability to keep the walk breaks to a minimum.

Saturday, April 16

Weather - Cloudy, intermittent sprinkles, then full-blown rain for the last 1.5 miles.  Approx. 45 degrees

Clothing - Long black capris, long sleeve tech shirt, baseball cap, fuel belt, spibelt with cell phone

Nutrition - Pack of running beans before starting, gu at mile 6, (2) 8 oz water, (2) 8 oz powerade

Route - Starting at Oak Green/Burke Cetnre Parkway to Ox Road. Make right and go past Whitehead to where the trail ends (around the bend), then back up Ox to the corner where FFX Parkway on ramp is, turnaround and go back up Burke Centre Parkway to the Kohls, turnaround again and ending at the corner of Oak Green and Burke Centre Parkway.

Distance Completed: 10 miles

Time:  Started at 6:50am, took 1 hr, 59 minutes

The plan was to run 10 miles.  We were unsure what the weather was going to do and had Sunday morning as a back-up day.  But it would be awfully nice to get it done and over with on Saturday morning.  It was in the back of my mind that if it started raining and we couldn't continue, I could always call Jeff to come get us. The run was great, just one steepish hill around mile 4 1/2, but it felt good to conquer it.  We took the pace nice and easy and was easily able to carry a conversation during every part.

The hardest part was the last 1.5 miles when it really started to rain.  We were soaked. I  was happy to have a hat to shield the rain falling from my face.  That helped greatly.  But at this point, we had come so far and it was going to be so sweet when we saw the 10 miles logged on the Garmin.

Anything I'd do different?  No, not on this run.  I think the combo of nutrition, clothing, timing of when we started out all worked perfectly together.  While it wasn't fun at all running in the rain, it was great to know we can do it and what it feels like.  Plus, it was just a short amount of distance (at the end!), it wasn't the whole time.

Mid-week runs - ran 5 miles on Tuesday, ran 4 miles on Thursday; both on the treadmill at the gym.  Tried to play with the speed to help go faster.

Friday, April 15

I have a little more than 7 months to go until the big day.  Tomorrow (April 15th) is day 1 in starting to train for the 26.2   J.W. and I have built up a base of 10 miles and we want to keep that mileage possible to run until it is time to start adding to it.  We've gotten this far, why let it slip and have to start over?

I thought it would be cool to document all of our training in a journal.  This will help me to keep track of what I've done.  I can go into great detail on what the conditions were, what worked, what didn't and what I want to change for the next run.  Plus, it will be useful should I need to look back and review.

Most likely I'll write a new entry in here once a week and discuss the long weekend run and the smaller mid-week runs all in the same entry.

Let the fun begin.  My new motto is going to be:  Just one more mile!
